Note that this A2996 Wi-Fi/Cellular model is sold only in mainland China. It does support GPS/GNSS, 4G LTE (29 bands), and 5G (26 bands) cellular networking. However, it does not support 5G mmWave. Unlike the global model, the mainland China model does not support 4G LTE bands 11 or 21, either. It supports eSIM; it does not support a physical SIM card.
The iPad mini A17 Pro – 7th Gen (Wi-Fi+Cellular China) features a fully-laminated, antireflective 8.3″ LED-backlit 2266×1488 “Liquid Retina” display (326 ppi, 500 nits) surrounded by a thin black bezel and is packed in a thin case with rounded corners and flat sides. The back has four metallic color options — a charcoal “Space Gray”, warm gray “Starlight,” (light) Blue, and (light) Purple.
This iPad mini is powered by a six-core Apple A17 Pro processor, a five-core GPU, and a 16-core “Neural Engine”, has 8 GB of RAM, and is equipped with 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB of flash storage. Other features include compatibility with Apple Intelligence software, “Touch ID” authentication integrated in the top button, and support for the Apple Pencil Pro (A2538, MX2D3AM/A) that conveniently charges via a magnetic connection on the side of the device. It has a front-mounted 12 megapixel “Ultra Wide” camera that shoots up to 1080p video, supports cinematic video stabilization, and “Center Stage” to automatically track and zoom to keep subjects in frame. It also has a rear-mounted 12 megapixel camera that shoots up to 4K video with cinematic video stabilization (and support for the modestly improved Smart HDR 4).
In addition to a USB-C port — and the aforementioned GPS/GNSS, 4G LTE, and 5G support — other connectivity includes 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6E) with 2×2 MIMO capability and Bluetooth 5.3. It has dual microphones and stereo speakers. Battery life is reportedly 10 hours of “surfing the web on Wi-Fi or watching video” and 9 hours using cellular data.
Compared to its predecessor, the iPad mini A17 Pro – 7th Gen (Wi-Fi+Cellular China) model is quite similar, but packs a faster processor, more RAM, faster Wi-Fi, a faster USB-C port, slightly improved camera software, and support for the modestly superior Apple Pencil Pro as well as higher capacity options, some different color choices, and support for the previously noted Apple Intelligence software functionality.
